The short answer
Stay in the Zona Romántica unless you want an all-inclusive, in which case look at Nuevo Vallarta, Marina Vallarta or the Hotel Zone. I would not mix those two holidays and hope the bus sorts it out.
| Area | Feel | Beach | Walk to restaurants | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zona Romántica | Old town, lively | Playa Los Muertos | Yes | First-timers, food, nightlife |
| Centro | Downtown, Malecón | Small, rocky | Yes | Sightseeing |
| Hotel Zone | Beach resorts | Long bay beach | Some | Beach stays near town |
| Marina Vallarta | Marina, golf | Resort beachfront | Within the marina | Short stays, boat trips |
| Nuevo Vallarta | All-inclusive | Wide and sandy | Little | Families, resort holidays |
| South Shore | Jungle hillsides | Coves | No | Couples, views |
Zona Romántica
This is the base I would pick for a first trip that is not an all-inclusive. Playa Los Muertos and its pier are here, the water taxis to Yelapa leave from the pier, and the streets are full of restaurants. Hotels are smaller, and many are adults-only. It is noisy near the bars at night. See the area guide.

Centro
North of the Río Cuale, Centro has the Malecón promenade, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and hillside guesthouses. Fewer beaches, more sightseeing. A sunrise walk on the Malecón is the fitness angle here, if that is your thing. See Centro and the Malecón.

Hotel Zone and Marina Vallarta
Mid-size and large beach resorts on the way to the airport, with frequent buses into town. Marina Vallarta adds the marina, where many boat tours start, and the cruise terminal. Useful if you want a pool and still plan to go out.

Nuevo Vallarta
Across the Ameca River in Nayarit, Nuevo Vallarta is a planned resort area with large all-inclusives on a long, flat beach. It is quiet, good for children, and 30 minutes or more from the Malecón by road. Lovely if the resort is the holiday. A mistake if you wanted town. See Zona Romántica vs Nuevo Vallarta.

South Shore
South of town, resorts sit on hillsides above coves at Conchas Chinas and Mismaloya. The views are the point. You will take taxis or buses into town.

How we rank hotels
The hotel pages rank a hotel once it has at least 50 Tripadvisor reviews, using the score out of 5. Places with fewer reviews, or an address outside the city, stay in the directory after the ranking. I do not publish a made-up nightly rate. Check your dates with the Agoda and Booking.com buttons.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Puerto Vallarta?
The Zona Romántica for walking and food; Nuevo Vallarta for all-inclusive resorts.
Is Nuevo Vallarta part of Puerto Vallarta?
No. It’s in the neighbouring state of Nayarit, north of the airport, though it shares the same airport and clock time.
Where should families stay?
Nuevo Vallarta or Marina Vallarta, for calmer beaches and resort facilities.
Is the Zona Romántica noisy?
Near the bars on Olas Altas and Basilio Badillo it can be. Ask for a room away from the street.
