When to go
The official season covers roughly December to March, and January and February are usually the best months. A sighting is likely then. It is not a promise. Anyone who guarantees a whale is selling you a story.

The rules
Whale watching in Mexico is regulated by the official standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010. Boats must hold a permit for the season, keep their distance, limit how long they stay with a group of whales and approach slowly. Swimming with humpback whales is not allowed.

Choosing a tour
- Ask whether the operator holds a current SEMARNAT permit.
- Smaller boats are closer to the water; bigger boats are steadier.
- Morning seas are often calmer.
- Some tours have marine biologists on board.
Without a tour
You may see whales spouting from the Malecón, the South Shore or a boat to Yelapa, especially in January and February.
