What to eat
Eat seafood by the sea and tacos at night. I list dishes, not restaurants I have not eaten in. If a stand is empty at 9pm, keep walking.
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Pescado zarandeado | Whole fish, butterflied, marinated and grilled over coals; a Nayarit and Sinaloa coastal speciality |
| Fish on a stick | Smoked fish skewers sold on the beach and at Los Muertos |
| Aguachile | Raw shrimp in lime, chilli and cucumber |
| Ceviche and tostadas | Fish or shrimp “cooked” in lime on a crisp tortilla |
| Birria | Slow-cooked spiced meat stew from Jalisco, often goat or beef |
| Tacos al pastor | Spit-roasted pork, a night-time staple |
| Raicilla | A regional agave spirit from the Jalisco coast and mountains |
Where to eat
- Zona Romántica: the most restaurants, from taco stands to fine dining, around Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas.
- Centro and the Malecón: seafront restaurants and street food on the side streets.
- Isla Río Cuale: casual spots under the trees.
- Bucerías and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle: seafood towns north of the airport.
Eating safely
- Choose busy stalls where food is cooked in front of you.
- Drink bottled or filtered water; restaurants and hotels usually use purified ice.
- Carry cash for stands and small places.
Food tours
Walking food tours of the Zona Romántica and Centro are popular for a first night. See things to do.
