Overview
The Zona Romántica (also called Old Town or Emiliano Zapata) is where most independent travellers stay: cobbled streets, small hotels and the town’s busiest beach. If you want to walk to dinner, this is the answer. If you want silence at 11pm, it is not.
Highlights
- Playa Los Muertos and its sail-shaped pier.
- Water taxis to Yelapa and the south coast.
- Restaurants and bars along Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas.
- Isla Río Cuale, a short walk north.
Getting around
Everything is walkable. Buses north to Centro and the Hotel Zone, and south to Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán, cost 11 MXN cash. See getting around.
Who it suits
First-timers, couples, food lovers and nightlife fans. It is noisy near the bars, and the hilly streets can be steep. I would ask for a room off the street if you are a light sleeper.
