What the advisories say
The tourist areas are generally fine. Follow the advisories, because conditions can change fast. I will not tell you it is risk-free. I will tell you what the advisory actually says.
| Jalisco | Level 3: reconsider travel |
| Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit | No restrictions on US government staff travel |
| Nayarit | Level 2: exercise increased caution |
| February 2026 | US staff told to shelter in place during blockades |
On 22 and 23 February 2026 the US Embassy issued a security alert after blockades and violence in Jalisco and neighbouring states, and US staff in Puerto Vallarta were told to shelter in place. Check the State Department page and your own government’s advice before you travel.
Everyday precautions
- Use taxis or app rides at night and stick to busy areas.

Scams and hassle

- Taxi fares: agree the price first or use an app.

Sea and sun
- Rip currents can be strong on open beaches; swim where others swim.
- Use sunscreen and drink water: the sun is intense.
