At a glance

Puerto Vallarta’s beaches run from busy town sand to jungle coves you can only reach by boat. Pick the mood first. The bus or the boat comes second.

Playa Los Muertos

The town beach, with the pier, beach clubs, vendors and water taxis. It has atmosphere, and it is rarely quiet. Go early if you want the sand before the clubs turn the music up. It is the base for Zona Romántica stays.

South Shore coves

Just south of town, Conchas Chinas has rock pools and clearer water. Further south, Mismaloya sits in a cove facing Los Arcos, a group of rock islands popular for snorkelling. Buses south along Highway 200 leave from the Zona Romántica.

Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerías

North of the airport, the beach becomes long and flat. Nuevo Vallarta is lined with resorts; Bucerías is a small town with a relaxed beach and restaurants.

Yelapa and the Marietas Islands

Yelapa is reached by water taxi. The Marietas Islands are a protected national park visited on authorised tours, with strict limits for the hidden beach.

Beach safety

Swell can be strong on open beaches, especially in summer. Swim where other people are swimming, follow any flags, and do not swim after drinking. I am boring about this on purpose.
